SAFE SPACE
- NONVIOLENCE: Commitment to Nonviolence We do not engage in violence—this includes physical or verbal threats, bullying, slander, “dragging” (online shaming or disparagement), harassment, assault, insults, teasing, slurs, relational aggression, destruction of property, negative talk about others, or intimidation. We hold ourselves accountable to both our intentions and our impact. When we learn that our words or actions have caused harm, we listen with openness and commit to changing our behavior.
- ACCOUNTABILITY: We do not “call out” or shame others. Instead, when someone’s behavior appears to be out of alignment with our safe space agreements, we approach the situation with care and compassion. We invite a facilitator to support and witness the conversation, ensuring it remains respectful and constructive. If needed, facilitators may also offer feedback on our behalf.
- IDENTITY: We honor the full complexity of each person’s identity. We do not make assumptions or judgments about anyone’s gender, sexuality, survivor status, class, ethnicity, immigration status, ability, or any other aspect of who they are. We use the names and pronouns that each community member shares with us. We stay mindful of our own privilege, and we intentionally make space for those with marginalized identities to speak, lead, and shape our community. We speak with care, rejecting ableist, transphobic, food-shaming, and all forms of oppressive language.
- CONSENT: We honor one another’s physical and emotional boundaries. Consent is essential—we ask before touching, observing, recording, or photographing others. We also approach sensitive conversations with thoughtfulness, seeking permission before raising topics that may be personal, emotional, or triggering. In all things, we lead with respect and care.
- PRESENCE: We In our community, we arrive on time, fully present, and open to both giving and receiving. We move with care, patience, and gentleness toward ourselves and others. We honor our limits, take breaks when needed, and communicate our needs with clarity and respect.show up to sessions on time, fully present, and ready to give and receive. We practice care, patience, and gentleness with ourselves. We take breaks when we need them and communicate clearly about our needs.
- LISTENING: In our community, we listen deeply and honor one another’s diverse experiences, perspectives, and ways of learning. We do not impose our beliefs or pressure others to agree with us. Instead, we cultivate respectful dialogue rooted in curiosity and mutual growth. We prioritize and uplift the voices of those directly affected by injustice, recognizing their lived experience as essential wisdom. We welcome “ragged” and imperfect thoughts, seeing them as courageous steps in honest exploration. Together, we ask questions, challenge assumptions, and build understanding—not just consensus.
- SHARING: In our community, we actively share our knowledge and skills, knowing that while no one holds all the answers, together we hold so much. We embrace the idea that some questions remain open, and we honor the growth that comes from uncertainty. We uphold confidentiality—what is shared with us stays with us. At the same time, we believe in the power of learning, and we carry forward the wisdom gained in ways that respect privacy and deepen our collective understanding.
