🌱 Essential Board Officer Roles
1. President / Chair
- Leads the board
- Oversees meetings and governance
- Serves as spokesperson for the board
2. Secretary
- Keeps meeting minutes
- Maintains corporate records
- Ensures filings (like annual reports) are on time
3. Treasurer
- Oversees finances and reporting
- Helps with budgets, fundraising tracking, and IRS filings
- Works closely with our bookkeeper or fiscal staff
🌾 Director Positions:
4. Agricultural/Farming Expert
- Brings real-world knowledge of sustainable farming, permaculture, or soil health
- Guides curriculum or helps mentor community members
5. Garden Educator or Advocate
- Has experience teaching gardening, especially to children or in schools
- Can help structure educational programs and youth activities
6. Nonprofit or Legal Professional
- Understands nonprofit compliance, bylaws, and legal responsibilities
- Helps protect the org and advises on board governance
7. Fundraising/Development Director
- Skilled in grant writing, donor engagement, or event planning
- Helps build financial sustainability
8. Community Connector or Organizer
- Strong ties to the local community, schools, or grassroots groups
- Helps build inclusive outreach and partnerships
9. Environmental or Food Justice Advocate
- Brings equity lens to your work
- Supports outreach to underserved communities and inclusive access to gardening
10. Program Director
- Compiles and initiates new programs
- Configures new program requirements and needs
- Makes sure all programs are running effectively and according to our mission
🌟 Optional or Specialized Roles:
- Marketing/Communications Director – for outreach, branding, social media
- Chef/Nutritionist – to tie gardening to healthy food education
- Youth Representative – a young adult or teen with lived experience in gardening programs
- Local Government or School Representative – for alignment with city or school programs

- Someone who will ensure programs align with the mission
- Someone who will set long-term goals and strategic direction
- Someone who will attend board meetings regularly
- Someone who will serve on committees or task forces as needed
- Someone who will be prepared, engaged, and active in decision-making
- Someone who will bring diversity in race, age, background, and skills
- Someone who will actively participate, not just lend their name
- Someone who will represent the organization in the community
- Someone who will promote the nonprofit’s mission and activities
- Someone who will build relationships with partners, funders, and supporters
- Someone who will provide guidance, feedback, and accountability
- Someone who will maintain and follow bylaws and policies
- Someone who will ensure WE operate legally and ethically
- Someone who will help ensure the organization complies with IRS and state nonprofit requirements
